So i was wif mum on Austin Street, getting our taxes done by good ole Norbert Eisen at H&R Block…and a Xangan had recommended 5 Burro Cafe (which happened to be RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from my H&R Block, so why not?). Mum and i were famished after taxes, and what better way to boost the economy then to spend that refund immediately?

I’d say that 5 Burro is definitely set up more like a bar than a cafe. seemed alot of the wait staff didn’t speak english except for our waitress, which i had no beef with. Service was a little on the slower side, but it seemed like she was by herself and she had quite a number of customers.

    Foooooood:

They start you out with chips and salsa. The chips are very fresh and crispy, and the salsa is really fresh, and goood. You can tell as its not weighed down by acidity nor sodium overload. Mum and i totally dogged the salsa and chips.

    Mejillones al Ajillo
(Mussels in White Wine Garlic Sauce): Mum and i were really surprised as these were really really good. They came out nice and piping hot.
    $10

the brothy bottom was really good, it made me wish we had some bread to dip into it, and squeezing the lemon into a mussel only increased the intensity of the already amazing flavor. After having had such a good experience with the mussels, i look forward to trying the shrimp cocktail next time….i too like to live dangerously.

1 Beef Burrito (served in rolled flour tortilla): To my recollection, this is the best steak/beef burrito i’ve ever had. The steak came with a smokey flavoring only enhanced and reinforced by the juicy tenderness of a perfectly cooked piece of steak. Not to mention their ridiculously fresh quacamole, creamy/fluffy sour cream added to the burrito made it off the top and off the hook. The beans with two kinds of melted cheeses was also very very well made and abundant in flavor in holding its own against the hunger assault. HOWEVER, the rice was…somewhat lacking…over cooked and rather on the dryer side…but mixing it with the beans produced a pallatable concoction, but still the rice was not so good that day. $10 (lunch portion)

Chipotle Chicken (1 chipotle breaded chicken breast served with grilled vegetables and mexican rice -spicy): uhg, the best part of this meal was the grilled vegetables. The chicken was juicy, but the ‘breading’ seemed to have merged with the spicy chipotle and became like a harsh heartburn paté that did not compliment but diminish the juicy chicken’s potential to title its way into a label of ‘tastes good’. I attempted to mix the rice into the ‘paté’ but failed miserably as the rice was hard/overcooked. this dish was just bad….but i was hungry…and it was on the spicy side…and i hate wasting food…$12 (lunch portion)

Summation: In all honesty, besides my horrible chipotle chicken dish, I’d definitely come back just for the steak burritos alone. Not to mention those surprising mussels. I’m definitely gonna head back for a burrito and also to try out that shrimp cocktail. In conclusion…the steak/beef burrito completely erased the horrible experience of the chipotle chicken.

  • wow.. best steak burrito.. sound good

  • Looks good, but I’m sure it is not as good as my burritos. (I moved from Western Canada to South Australia where good Mexican is in very short supply. I have had to learn to make it for myself and I am very thankful for the American who owns a Mexi-supply where I can easily get the ingredients I need).
