Co-workers, friends, and fellow foodies have been talking about five guy’s for the longest time. and it always smelt wonderful whenever the co-workers brought it back to the office.

so i thought it was high time that i try it out, and since there was one near my office, there was no good excuse not to try it!

So a friend was also in the mood for some burger tasting.

They actually have barrels of salted and unsalted peanuts for you to partake in while you wait for your food. The peanuts are actually pretty good, and i recommend trying both the salted and unsalted.

Our food came, and was filled into two greasy paper bags, along with my Barq’s root beer. i had gotten cajun fries, regular fries, and three kinds of burgers to try my fill of what this place had to offer.

First up was the Regular French Fries they had to order. Five Guy’s prides itself on the different kinds of potatoes it uses for its fries, hence the reason for them always ‘announcing’ (usually written on a board) as to what type of fries the french fries are made out of this time. The fries were ok, nothing special or anything that would wow anyone. $3.29

Cajun French Fries: the only difference between this and the regular fries is the seasoning they put on the fries. I admit the cajun seasoning is really good, but without the support of good french fries, it falls somewhat short. I know for 100% sure that if they made better fries, the Cajun Fries would be the talk of this place…but unfortunately…that is not the case….$3.29

Cheese Burger (Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles and Grilled Onions): this was my friend’s order. it looked great and smelt great! $6.99 One of the things that attracts alot of people to this joint is the fact that you can put on as many toppings as you want and they don’t charge you, sort of like cheeburger cheeburger.

    fguys12

Hamburger (Lettuce and Tomato): I decided to get a base burger to see what it tastes like without all the extras. Surprisingly a regular burger actually comes with two patties. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and good…the regular burger didn’t wow me, nor did it taste anything special. $6.29

Cheese Burger (Grilled onions and bbq sauce): I had tried to order bacon, but the lady had told me they were out…she had muttered something but i hadn’t heard what she said over the bumness i was feeling over lack of bacon…i guess she said she’d add another beef patty since they were out of bacon.the bbsauce was good but i wish that had given me more…the cheese was aite, and the onions were really good…but all together the burger still didn’t wow me…Ultimately i felt the burger was undercooked…i mean you can totally see the pinkness in the picture..which was soft and mooshy raw…bleah…$6.99

    fguys14

fguys15 Summation: Yeah, this burger joint fell way short of my expectations…as everyone had raved about it and had also mentioned what a merry bunch of people worked behind the counter…they didn’t seem too merry to me….

Also i felt there was just too much meat for the burger itself…the buns were really good, but again the burgers felt somewhat short…admittedly i would probably just get the cajun fries for the cajun flavoring…

On the off chance that this place was having a bad day…I will be revisiting it for one last go…and also to try the hotdog. Plus i look forward to trying the little hamburger, which contains only one patty…so it might work better for me….and also maybe it will be cooked all the way through…

What really blew was the fact that i was starving….and yet still this kind of review….and i went on a friday night at 8pm…so it was really busy….
we also got a bottle of water; total cost: $33.20

Well here goes round 2, as my first experience wasn’t so great, but i wasn’t ready to put this place down for the count since so many ‘swear’ by it.

But this time i’d be coming at a different angle. I came on a non-busy night, and also decided to try less meat and also the hot dog.

Hopefully my experience would be different. This time it wasn’t as busy…but i still didn’t feel the ‘friendliness’ of the counter people.

Cajun French Fries: wowsers, next time i’m gonna ask them to sprinkle the cajun spice on my hamburger instead…as the cajun flavor is the only thing that really attracts me to these fries…what’s nice is that they don’t skimp you on the fries, they basically dump fries right into the paper bag…$3.29

Little Hamburger (lettuce, little just means they use one hamburger patty instead of two in the regular burger): this was pretty good. I think the less meat option really was better. The meat was well cooked and the fresh bun worked really well with the lettuce. I wish i had some ketchup. lol. $4.99

    fivguys7

    fivguys8

Little Bacon Cheese Burger (Grilled Onions and BBQ sauce): This was actually really good. no over meat-age. good tangy-ness of bbq sauce, cheese would be better if you could choose the type of cheese. but this medly of flavor burger worked out pretty nicely. It makes me think about getting a bag of burgers like Wimpy or Jughead. lol. $6.59

Bacon Dog (just bacon hot dog, no extras as i just wanted to try this in its purest): HOLEY SHEET this was the motherfucken show stealer. WTF WTF WTF?!!?!? they slice the dog in half and press it against the grill as it cookes, so the outside of the dog is CRISPY and the inside is hot and juicy. Acompanied by the soft bun and salty bacon this dog is one of….actually the BEST hot dog i’ve ever had at an OUTSIDE ESTABLISHMENT. Another noticeable factor is that its not a SMALL HOTDOG like you get from the street hotdog vendors in NYC. I can’t wait to go back to try this with other options. $5.49

Summation: I could not believe how crispy, hot the hot dog was….hmmm i should ask them to add Cajun powder to it. If can only eat one thing, i HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE DOG! There is no wow factor about the burgers, but the hot dog…plenty of wow ability there. (of course there is the pricetag of the dog that kind of nullifies the wow factor….but thats up to you…if you’re in the mood for a good dog with unlimited toppings…go for itz.)

The burgers were alot better this time around, and the french fries are better when they are hot (when they get cold they get kind of starchy hard….nuke them maybe?) but the show stealer is definitely this dog.

    • those fries don’t look any special to me..but those burgers look delicious!

    • those burgers look delicious!!! i’ve actually had french fry cravings for a while… i went over to mcd’s in my area to get something off the dollar menu, but i found out that it was the $1.49 menu now @_@

    • Yum, I must try the burgers one day. I think they opened one in Brooklyn recently

    • I always get the 1 meat one… but I LOVEEE 5 guys! Too bad it’s sooo bad for you. I haven’t been to one in almost a year now ^_^

    • It didn’t live up to my expectation, eh.

    • That is so weird!  I just went to 5guys for the first time on Friday night!!!  The one on Bleecker & 7th though.  I was going to say I like my burgers less than well done but that last burger pic is a little TOO uncooked for my liking, eeks.  My burger was pretty good actually but I ordered a little one cuz I thought it would actually be smaller.  Review/pics to come, will let you know when I get my desktop up and running and can start posting pics again *mumble grumble

    • I haven’t gone either… Shake Shack usually gets my money when I decided to splurge on calories. The dogs/grilled cheese look interesting.

    • Wow manhattan prices are double nj’s prices. And they’re supposed to cook the burgers all the way! I usually get a little burger cuz the regular burger is just too much! Their hot dogs are good but it annoys me when they split the bun into 2 pieces so all the toppings just end up falling in your lap.

    • way better than the burgers in HK!!!!!!!!!

    • I would have returned the severely undercooked burger! What if you got sick?  Wow…and the burger prices seem very expensive for a burger joint! That’s the same price we pay if we ate at a restaurant….and it comes with fries and customer service!  The fries look alright…they look suitable for poutine…yumm!

    • danggggg $33 o.O I rather eat at a restaurant haha. that place gives me a heart attack!
