  • Winnipeg Day 2: The Original Pancake House

    Pancake House
    PH: 204-452-1040

    1049 Pembina Highway
    Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

    pcake1 pcake2
So i was fiending for some american breakfast, and Osmundaregalis already had a location picked out for us to go stuff our faces. She told me the name of the place “The Original Pancake House” and immediately i thought of the chain that i had eaten at in Maryland….

i actually thought it was the same chain, and my experience had been quite pleasant there…so i was looking forward to stuffing my face here!!!

    Food:

    pcake3

Breakfast actually took some time to get to us…it was weird cause tables that were sat after us actually got their food first….had atleast 1 refill of coffee before getting our food.

    pcake4

The blue berry pancakes were a surprised, as Osmundaregalis thought they would just be blueberry shtuff to put on reg pancakes…but they actually put it into the pancakes. However, this was not good. It’s like they dumped some of that blue berry shtuff into instant pancake mix that you can buy at the store and add water, shake it up and make so called blue berry pancakes. These were NOT GOOD. Powdered sugar, butter, syrup…nothing could save these….

    pcake6

    pcake7

Sausage Links side…we wanted some meat….these were undercooked…meaning the frozen sausages weren’t warmed up enough…there were parts still cold.

    pcake8

bacon was disgusting….tasted and felt like cardboard….total wtfuckage…how do you fuck up bacon?

    pcake9

Last but not least, the Minced Ham and scrambled eggs…i had to add so much salt and pepper to even make it palatable….

    pcake10

again how do you fuck up eggs? even baking wise, this shouldn’t have tasted as bad as it did. the potato hash was also palatable with lots of salt and pepper.

    pcake11

Summation: this place was horrible and it was nothing like the Original pancake house in MD, moreover, its not the same chain or anything related.

It was very weird, as Osmundaregalis had eaten here before, and she said it was never this bad, but she agreed that this time the food was way subpar.

I do not recommend this place. it was a complete waste of C$29.83 ($30.50USD)

This place is actually the second worst place i’ve ever eaten internationally. First place is still held by a ramen place in vienna.

  • Winnipeg Day 1: Nhu Quynh

    Nhu Quynh Restaurant
    PH: 204-786-1182

    609 Ellice Avenue
    Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

    nhu1

So Osmunderwear invited me to visit her in Winnipeg (FINALLY!) and take me onto some sexcapades (oh yeah!)…with food (still good…foodcapades? 0_o) mmm more food porn for you guys, woot! While in Winnipeg, i learned it’s really…brown up there….though she explained to me its cause winter just ended and all that dirty snow was to blame…sure sure…but the real thing i learned about Winnipeg is that they have a pretty large Vietnamese Community up there…and what large community doesn’t bring along their CULTURAL FOOD! hence the reason almost every other block…forget it, more like every block had 1 to 2 Vietnamese Restaurants….luckily she had some favorites to already take me too!

    nhu2

After the 6 hour plane ride (there are no direct flights to winnipeg) and some other shtuff that happened at customs that i will not get into…(just a word of advice, whenever customs asks you “what is the purpose of your stay?” never answer with “for fun!”) i was shtarving…FEASTING TIME!

    Phod:

    nhu6

Cha Gio (Special Saigon Spring Rolls – 6 Rolls): as you can see there are only five, cause i guess someone else was hungrier than i was. *ahem* C$6.00 ($ 6.13 USD)

    nhu7

These were good, nice and hot, good flavored, but definitely not the kind of viet spring rolls that i’m use to.

    nhu8

And of course the lovely supplied fish sauce…though this seemed like it was reduced/thickened and sweetened…which was a nice touch.

Spring Roll, Summer Roll (aka Salad Roll), and Egg Roll:
as far as i’m concerned, i’d rather follow what foodnetwork says than WikiPedia. Spring Rolls are the crunchy fried rolls that are thin skinned. Egg Rolls are fried and thick skinned. Summer Rolls are those Salad Rolls with the shrimp in it. (if you want to argue, don’t bother, take it up with foodnetwork.)

    nhu9

of course for all pho, there’s always a plate of bean sprouts, hot chilis, mint leaves, and lemon/lime to accompany it. Oddly enough, i’ve never seen these micro chilis accompany my pho in the city that never sleeps. but it was cute…ahem cool looking so i took a pic.

    nhu10

Pho Dac Biet (Deluxe Beef Rice Noodle – meaning it got everything in it): told ya she was hungry. Large – C$7.50 ($ 7.67 USD)

    nhunew1

    nhu11

Pho Tai Bo Vien (medium rare beef and beef ball rice noodle soup): this was really really good. the broth was nice and hot and very flavorful, and not overly salty. C$5.99 ($ 6.12 USD)

    nhu12

the ingredients were fresh, loved putting the bean sprouts in, the beef was good, and the meatballs were a hit! and i love the onions and scallions….

    nhu13

what stuck out to me most was the rice noodles, they were really fresh! i don’t think i’ve ever had rice noodles so fresh before…

    nhu14
She got Che Ba Mau (like an ABC Icey): forgot the price though.
    doh.
    nhu15
I got a Sinh To Sau Rieng (Blended Durian Shake): man, this was really freaking good, and STINKY! lol. C$4.75 ($ 4.86USD)

    nhu16

ok fine, we were both pretty hungry and housed the food. Everything was really good.

    nhu17

Summation: YAY! they have a parking lot, so didn’t have to park in the street…i love parking lots. All the food was really good, and the service was pretty friendly….though i did notice that they just plop down a pad of paper and pen, and you just right the numbers of the items you want, and they take it when you’re done…i don’t know if its them being lazy from taking an order, or language barrier…or culture maybe? *shrug….food was great, service good, belly was happy.

    CHEERS!

    wait…what the hell?

    nhulast

since we had eaten dinner at an ‘awkward’ time, we decided to get a ricebox, just in case we got hungry, and everything was closed….that is definitely one thing i noticed about EVERYWHERE i’ve ever visited….things close…alot earlier…or at all. As you can see i only remembered to take it with my blackberry…the meat pie and shredded tendons and the pork itself was really good. Definitely recommend their pho, rice dishes, and spring rolls, and of course their durian shake. lol.

  • Vegan Week @ Good Health Burgers – Black Bean Burger

    Good Health Burgers
    PH: 212-888-8007

237 East 53rd Street (between 2nd Ave and 3rd Ave)
    New York, NY 10022

    goodhealth1

A lot of readers have been asking me about vegan restaurants in the city, and if i’d ever do a review of them or not. Now mind you i’ve had vegan food that tried to imitate meat eater food back in 2000…and was less than pleased…the only time it remotely was good was when a vegan invited me into his home for a feast, and that was ridiculously good. So i was kind of skeptical in trying any vegan take out places…But my walls were warn down when my vegan co-worker kept recommending and swearing by the black bean burger from this one place…SO WHY NOT!?

    goodhealth2

you can see how small it is inside.
These first two pics are not mine. found them on the internet.

    goodhealth3

Food took a while to arrive, but it came nice and warm/hot.

    goodhealth4

I ordered a bunch of food to try. I was fearful that the burger, by itself, wouldn’t fill me up. the food smelt great….mmmm…

    goodhealth5

    goodhealth6

Black Bean Bacon Vegan Burger (An earthy flavor burger with crisp veggie bacon strips, pepper portobello, onion, quacamole, dairy free sourcream, vegan mayo and bbq sauce, all served on a toasted wheat bun, with a side of chips and salsa):  The chips were really really good…i am starting to believe they make their own chips. All included in the pic for $8.25

    goodhealth7

the burger patty looked firm, but looks can be deceiving. here goes nothing.

    goodhealth8

Holey sheeet, this black bean burger business was GOOOOOOD! the patty held on to its firmness, and the mass of flavors played well with each other. I can honestly say i was pleased. and would not mind ordering this again…hands down i’d recommend it. (one other thing to note, the vegan bacon was pretty good too! quite surprised this is all vegan.)

    goodhealth9

    goodhealth10

Crispy Soy-Chicken Nuggets (served with honey dijon mustard): these smelt heavenly and had a nice crispy crunch to it on the outside. $5.25

    goodhealth12

in my honest opinion, this did not taste like chicken at all. but it was really good. i mean if they just called it crispy tofu nuggets, would definitely be more fitting.

    goodhealth13

(but i think they add in the word ‘chicken’ to hint at you what its ‘suppose’ to be). But the nuggets are definitely good.

    goodhealth14

French fries: These were RIDICULOUSLY GOOD. i’d say these make a great support to such a tasty burger! $1.95

Summation: I definitely recommend the items i had at this joint. I look forward to eating from this place for the rest of the week. next up “Spicy Texan BBQ Riblet Burger”

Vegan Week @ Good Health Burgers – Vegan Riblet

    Good Health Burgers
    PH: 212-888-8007

237 East 53rd Street (between 2nd Ave and 3rd Ave)
    New York, NY 10022

    goodhealth1

Meal 2 of the vegan week. Another burger had caught my attention from the get go and i was actually eager to try it. Having had such a great experience with the black bean burger, i was willing to try out the riblet. yum!

    goodheath1

Got the spicy riblet with fries again, jeez those dang fries are goooooood.

    goodheath2

    goodheath3

as said in the previous entry, the chips that the burgers come with are ridiculously good…yum! (however, even on the second turn, the salsa is super lacking…i usually just take it like a shot of slighly spicy V8 [but with less sodium])

    goodheath4

French Fries: still freaking amazing. $1.95

    goodheath5

Spicy Texan BBQ Riblet Burger (Juicy BBQ vegetarian riblet with jalapeno and melted cheddar cheese [you can switch out the cheddar for soy cheese] on country wheat bun): still interesting that everything pictured hear is vegan. $8.95

    goodheath6

The texture of the actual riblet was just like a McRib, which was pretty freaking weird. it was very tender and juicy, and firm. Which still surprises me, cause i always thought vegan renditions of meat always fell apart so easily or were tofu-ey/chewy.

    goodheath7

The riblet was like a sponge and absorbed flavor well. The jalapeno’s gave it a nice kick/bite that accented well with the tangy bbq sauce.

Summation: in the end i admit, i liked this better than the black bean burger, which was also really good. This definitely gives me a whole new perspective on vegan eating.

    Next up: Vegan Pepper Steak

    Friday, May 06, 2011

Vegan Week @ Good Health Burgers – Pepper Steak

    Good Health Burgers
    PH: 212-888-8007

237 East 53rd Street (between 2nd Ave and 3rd Ave)
    New York, NY 10022

    goodhealth1

well some of you might be wondering if this is Vegan week…why are there only three entries? I admit…the riblet and tofu nuggets were so good…i actually repeated them separately as meals with fries. So instead of boring you with repeat pics, i spread out the originals. woot!

    vegpep1

Vegetarian Black Pepper Steak Box (Succulent, well flavored soy protein, grilled with peppers and onions in our Chef’s special sauce. Spinach, brown rice and sweet adamame dumpling and salad): i complained that i never got the adamame dumplings and that they spelled edamame wrong. =P $12.50

    vegpep2

    vegpep3

salad was ok, as was the dressing, but i still finished it…which is kinda funny…coming from a vegetarian/vegan place…thought the salad would be…AMAZING…but not even close…

    vegpep4

    Sauteed spinach…twas aite…

    vegpep5

Pepper steak….holey bejeebus…this was gooooooooooooood. flavoring was good, meat was very succulent…i was at first worried that the ‘meat’ would be overly tough and non-flavorful, but it kicked me in the face with a ‘HAI YA!’ of flavor.

    vegpep6

Summation: the pepper steak was really good…everything else that came with the meal…was only aite. I think that the brown rice was overkill or maybe people that like brown rice will be ok with it…however, for me, i think that the vegetarian pepper steak would have worked out alot better with plain ole white rice…it just felt like the brown rice was too ‘rough’ for this dish. *shrug, then again maybe that’s just my preference.

Vegan week has been a great experience, and i’m really happy that vegan cooking/eating has come a long way since i first tried it ten years ago (horror story will go unheard…for now) and am looking forward to trying other stomping grounds that my vegan co-worker has to recommend! so be on the look out for omre VEGAN REVIEWS! WOOT!

    CHEERS! have a great weekend!

    • Aussie Burger at Ruby’s Cafe: Burger #6 out of 82 Burger Challenge

      Ruby’s Cafe
      PH: 212-925-5755

219 Mulberry Street (between Spring and Prince)
      New York, NY 10012

      ruby1

So my friend Helena noticed Ruby’s on my 82 burger challenge list, and told me that she’d definitely go with me when i hit this joint up. Its her favorite burger place, SO WHY NOT!?

      Décor:

      inside

As you can see this Aussie burger joint is pretty small. Don’t let this pic fool you, we went at a weird hour and when the weather was quite cold. Normally this place is pretty bumpin, and a pretty long wait. They also open up the windows and have semi-outdoor seating.

Doing a little research, there are actually two well known burgers here. Luckily my partner in crime was willing to get one, and I the other so that we could split and partake in both. WOOT!

      Menu:
      ruby2
      click for blurry Page 1
      ruby3
      click for blurry Page 2

      Food:

      ruby4

I started off with a nice text Limonata, which is just a refreshing carbonated lemon drink (kinda reminded me of Vienna so i got it) $2.50

      ruby5

Bronte (premium ground beef, tomato, lettuce, sweet chili sauce, mayo and cheese): This burger was very interesting, first things first, its a lot bigger than a regular sized burger, its like longer. The other thing is they ground the meat pretty fine, so its a lot more like meatloaf, than a burger, but instead of putting in bread crumbs, the add in greens and herbs…which make the burger really juicy and flavorful. But i believe what really makes the burger is the spicy sweet sauce that accompanies it. $10.00

      ruby6

      ruby7a

Whaley (premium ground beef, tomato, lettuce, beet, pineapple, fried egg & ketchup): In all honesty, i couldn’t taste or see any pineapple in this burger…overall it was good. $12.50

      ruby8

      ruby9

They don’t serve fries so all of the burgers come with a really good salad medly with some nice balsamic-vina dressing.

      ruby10

ruby11 Summation: It may have been that i had the Bronte before i had my half of the Whaley, but i felt the Bronte was really good, and alot better than the Whaley…but you can always order a fried egg on your Bronte. lol.

The environment is nice…however, it is a very small place…and i found it a little weird, when a mexican climbs out of a hole in the floor of the kitchen to cook the burger for you. Then when he’s done, he goes back down the hole. 0_o

I’m not kidding, go to the bathroom and you’ll see the entire kitchen…its like the size of my closet…quite literally. (if you look at the first pic, of “Décor” you’ll see the kitchen is behind the glass.)

Other than that weirdness, the burgers are great! and i look forward to coming here again! CHEERS!

    • Return to Taco King for the Mexican Fix

      Taco King
      PH: 718-896-8100

      64-05 108th St
      Forest Hills, NY 11375

      tking1

After having gotten back from quite a rigorous workout, i was fiending for some good mexican food, and i decided to hit up the ole reliable Taco King. But this time around i wanted to stray from my regular path and try some of their other items (of course with a safety item).

      tking2

Grilled Chicken Quesadillas Supreme (Grilled chicken, melted monterey jack cheese melted between two fresh flour tortillas with a side of sour cream): Ultimately this was really good, they brown up the tortilla so the cheese melts and it adds a nice smokeyness to the flavoring and aroma. $4.25

      tking3

      tking4

Steak Burrito (served in large fresh tortillas with rice, black bean, cheddar cheese, quacamole, sour cream, lettuce and tomato): this was really good and really filling, i could only eat half of it. the steak was nice and juicy. It would have been even better if it had some sour cream. =P $6.25

      tking5

      tacokingEXTRA1

Mexican Rice and Steak (it is what it says it is): It’s nice cause they give you a little mexican chili with the rice and steak. The rice is flavorful, steak is juicy and smokey, and the chili has a nice accent to it. (again some sour cream would have made it better) but all in all it was really good. $4.25

      tacokingEXTRA2

Summation: Still 100% my go to place, and now trying more and more items, i don’t have to worry since this place is always consistent. I’ve also had the hard shell taco supremes, and they come hot and crunchy…I can’t wait to try everything in their spicy incantations. I definitely recommend the joint for simple, hot, quick, and CHEAP good EATS!!!

    April 11, 2011

    • Return to Taste Good

      Taste Good
      PH: 718-898-8001

      82-18 45th Avenue
      Elmhurst, NY 11373

      tgoo1

I was fiending for some Hainanese Chicken on rice, and the only place open at the hour was Taste Good, and i had also heard from others that this place had really good Hainanese Chicken….and since i’ve never had it before there…WHY NOT!? (jeez i say ‘and’ alot)

      tgoo1

Char Kway Teow (Malaysia’s famous wok fried flat rice noodles with fresh shrimp, fish cake, bean sprouts, egg and chives): My co-hort said this was really really good. one of the best he’s ever had. $6.00

      tgoo2

      tgoo3

Hainanese Chicken Rice (own house special rice subtle flavored with our steamed chicken stock served with specially blended soy & chili sauce): This is awesome that you get soup and this amount of food for just $5.00

      tgoo4

The chicken was really really good, nice fatty pieces, and love the cucumber slivers in the salty soy sauce at the bottom of the plate.

      tgoo5

Their chicken stock rice (Yow fahn) is one of the best i’ve had in Queens. man was it good.

Summation: The food was really good for the price…

However, the other day i ordered Hainanese Chicken on rice take out, and they ridiculously skimped me on the chicken…no soup either on take out, the box was like majority Rice (which was still really good) but they gave me like four pieces of tiny chicken (1/3 of what you see in the pictures above) which really pissed me off and i found it really really annoying, quite unacceptable. so i would not recommend getting this as take out.

    • Azriha’s Spicy Popcorn

      spicycorn1

Ingredients: Grated Romano (or parmesan), Pepper, Cayenne Pepper, Cumin, Chili powder, paprika, and garlic salt (depending on your popcorn, you might want to use just garlic powder instead). teaspoon of everything except for the pepper and garlic salt just a light sprinkle is fine. (i like to put extra cheese in mine. )

      spicycorn2

      Find two big bowls.

      spicycorn3

Put half of your ingredients at the bottom of the bowl. i put some paper towels to absorb some of the excess oil.

      spicycorn4

put half of your freshly popped popcorn (i used non salted buttered popcorn, it will help the ingredients stick better). then put the rest of your ingredients on top and the rest of your popcorn on top of that!

      spicycorn5

Put second big bowl on top and SHAKE RELENTLESSLY!

      spicycorn6

you’re ingredients should be well spread if you shook it right, if not, feel free to shake till it is completely covered.

      spicycorn7

nice hot spicy cheese popcorn….yum. Careful not to overspice your first time.

      PH: 516-799-4900

      4847 Merrick Road
      Massapequa Park, NY 11762

      smok1

My Uncle was visiting from Hong Kong and my mother had not seen him (her brother) for over ten years. So i wanted to bring them to a place that had really good food that they’d enjoy, and also nothing asian since i highly doubt there’s any asian food here that could top HK…so i decided to take him to what america is known best for….BBQ!!!!

*note: i did not take this store front picture, please excuse all my pics in this entry as it was pretty dark inside.

      smok2

I made sure to do all of the ordering, our food came fast. Mum and I got Rootbeer while My uncle had some wine.

      smok3

The Big House Salad (a large platter of lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and carrots with your choice of dressing [thousand island] which automatically comes on the side.) Had to get some veggies on the table, and though iceberg lettuce isn’t my first choice, the greens served its purpose. the salad was fresh, and good. $9.99

      smok4

Combo #4 – Ribs! Ribs! & more Ribs! (A feast of ribs which includes a half rack of Baby Backs, a half rack of St Louie Grand ribs, and 4 Monster Bones. comes with your choice of 2 sides and cornbread): These were just as good as i remember them. we got garlic mashed pots and cole slaw. The cole slaw is really good, mashed pots are good hot, and their cornbread is to die for…its especially good if the place is busy as the cornbread seems hotter/warmer fresher. $30.99

      smok4a

Let’s Wing It (Smoked chicken wings seasoned in Al’s famous rub and then drenched in Al’s famous original bbq sauce): These are still the best bbq wings i’ve ever had in my life…the first thing that hits you is the smokeyness, and then the tangyness of the sauce….still the best bbq wings i’ve ever had. $13.99 (for Large order)

      smok5 smok6
Summation: Still the best bbq place i’ve ever been to in NY. And the best bbq wings i’ve ever had in my life…and i went to college up in Buffalo, so i’ve had my fair share (notice i did not say best BUFFALO WING). I still highly recommend this place, as i’d definitely come back just for the cornbread and wings alone. CHEERS!!!
