    nick1

To be absolutly honest i’d never heard of Nick’s untill the Shrink had mentioned it to me and wanted to meet up there. JW1976 explained to me that itwas a part of the “Grimaldi Empire” and that i should like it since i’m so into neopolitan pizza. *shrug, WHY NOT?

    nick2

They don’t serve Stewie beers anymore. They serve Abita Beer, which is still really good…not as good as Capt’n Eli’s but good none the less.

    nick3

Our pizza came fresh, hot, and looked great…we got half sausage half plane…er plain.

    nick4

Shrink couldn’t wait and ninja’d a slice before i got to take a pic of the whole pie. LOL

    nick5

My slice…this was actually really good. crunchy bottom, stringy fresh cheese, great “not overly salty” sausage, and the fresh leaves were awesome.

    nick6

and of course Feisty Foodie always wants me to take a pic of the bottom of the slice…still don’t understand/know why…

Summation: Sorry for the blurry pics of late…I’ve been lazy and only using my cell phone cam to take pics of food/eats.

Nick’s was really good. love the atmosphere and love the area that it is tucked into. I’m definitely looking forward to go back and try other items on the menu. I highly recommend this place to grab a slice or on the go…as there were a ton of pickups for take out. WOOT!

So ever since the first time i’ve been here, i’ve always wanted to go back…FINALLY an opportunity and enough light to take decent pictures…still with cell phone woot, time to try some new things!!!!

    French Onion Soup: $6.75

    ctriskelr1

This is a must get everytime you’re here. MUST GET IN MOUF! (careful though, really hot.)

    Foie Gras: $14.95

    ctriskelr4

Was really good last time, was really good this time. Definitely recommend if foie gras is your cup of tea!

    Escargot: $8.95

    ctriskelr2

(Snails, prosciutto, herb butter) served with Toasted bread. Sorry no pics of the bread, but this is soooooo goood… the snails are soooooo succulent. best part is taking the toasted bread and dipping into the herb butter concoction…GENIUS!

    ctriskelr3

    Mussels a la Nage: $18.95

    ctriskelr5

I admit, i’m a mussel fiend, and this place makes them really good. This is the dinner portion. and the french fries are to die for, you can ask them for ketchup or better yet…dip them in the mussel broth…*drooling on keyboard nao….

    ctriskelr6

    Dessert Crepes!

    ctriskelr7

Yesh, we were uber full…but there’s always room for dessert!!! lol.

    Poached Pear: $7.50

    ctriskelr8

This was really good, too much for me, but i think anyone that likes poached pear will love this crepe rendition.

    Lemon & Sugar: $4.75

    ctriskelr9

This is by far my favorite crepe here…no matter how full i am, i can definitely dog this…sooo goood…sooo lemony….sooo good…*tear.

    Le Bill:
ctriskelr10 Summary: hahaha admittedly i think the only new items i tried was the escargot and the poached pear…both were a great addition to the items i love getting at this place.

Though what i really want to try is their steak, crab cakes, duck….oh wait…i should just say the rest of the menu

I highly recommend this joint…it’s really great for dates and small groups of maybe 6 at most? Great environment, lovely neighborhood (on that street…don’t stray! )

  • Return to Satay

    Satay
    PH: 718-888-1868

    46-01 Kissena Blvd (Holly Str)
    Flushing, NY 11355

    Satay1.jpg

So Jelly Bao has been telling me about a bunch of really good places to eat, so i figured i’d thank her by taking her to one of the places i like to eat at. Though this was a little difficult as Jelly has eaten at a lot of restaurants that i like/have eaten at…so to surprise her…was a tad bit difficult…but sure enough i had this place in mind. WOOT!

    rsatay1

Hainanese Chicken: a reader had seen my review on the place and had urged me to try the Hainanese Chicken at Satay. I honestly didn’t even know that Hainanese Chicken was served at Satay. It was pretty good. (not the best i’ve had, but pretty good. Best is still a fight between Sentosa, Penang Elmhurst, and Taste Good.) (one thing to definitely note, the cook’s blade isn’t sharp enough. Instead of cutting/chopping through the chicken bone, it’s shattering it [usually cause the blade is dull]…which is a little annoying as you’ll have a lot of bone shards to spit out.)

    rsatay2

    rsatay3

Malaysian Cheung Fun: Whenever i go to Satay, this is a MUST GET dish for me. I feel they do this dish sooooo freaking well…the mixture of sauce, the deep fried egg on top is always amazing and there’s a small tiny portion that has spicy sauce, so if you want you can always kick it up a notch. I highly recommend this dish. (i have yet to find this dish at other Malaysian Restaurants…lol)

    rsatay4

Sarang Burung: Quite the common dish to order at a Malaysian Restaurant. I feel so far, this restaurant has the best rendition of this dish i’ve had before. The taro is always cooked perfectly crispy on the outside and warm and gooey and welcoming inside.

    rsatay5

Sizzling Tofu and Ground Pork: another staple dish thats almost always ordered at Malaysian restaurants, i feel this one and the one at Taste Good are great competitors of flavor and richness…however, Taste Good always win cause of their neat little trick of perfectly cooked egg on the underside.

    rsatay6

Summation: I always love it when people come eat with me and let me choose the place and pick the food…I get to order everything i’m in the mood for *greedy laughter*

best part? LEFTOVERS TO BRING TO WORK THE NEXT DAY! WOO HOO!!!

Ultimately, Satay is still really good, and i do highly recommend feasting there. The Malaysian Cheung Fun is a MUST GET!

  • Valencia Luncheria Moves to a New Location

    Valencia Luncheria
    PH:
    203-846-8009

    NEW ADDRESS!: 164 Main Street
    Norwalk, Connecticut 06851

    vallun1

One time i drove up to get some eats at Valencia and saw that it was closed, i was quite saddened, then i realized that there was a huge sign with an arrow pointing down the block…Valencia Luncheria had not closed, but MOVED! to a BIGGER and BETTER location! they even have a parking lot! which isn’t much of a parking lot, but I’LL TAKE IT! The decor (sorry no pics) is really nice inside, far more spacious than their former location. But most importantly let’s see if the food has lost any of its MOJO!

    Steamed Mussels: $10.00

    vallun2

Prince Edward Island Mussels with a coconut Lime Ginger Broth. It comes with an arepa cut into four pieces.

    vallun3

Once you open the pot of mussels it is sooooo aromatic…but that’s not all.

    vallun4

the mussels are large and succulent, and the broth is purely GENIUS! you’ll love dipping the arepa into the broth to soak it up and eat it. It’s really tasty, and you’ll wish you had a more absorbent type of bread to soak up such tasty broth.

    Paella: $18.00

    vallun5

Shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, calamari, chorizo, chicken, and saffron scented rice. This becomes the best Paella i’ve ever had. (though i’m still dying to try a lobster paella in New Jersey…) and is sooo packed with such wonderful ingredients. They do not skimp at all, and all the wonderful flavors and how its cooked to perfection. I highly recommend getting this! It’s just sooo good! and Paella for 18 dollars, hot damn that’s cheap! especially with all the seafood in it! This definitely steals the show.

    vallun6

Summation: I use to just get “The Works” or a couple of Arepas, but there is so much more to Valencia Luncheria than just Arepas and Empanadas…I highly recommend you go exploring, as so far all of the dishes i’ve tried at Luncheria are authentic and ridiculously good.

Kudos to Michael Young for not only moving to a larger location but maintaining the excellence in his food.

    Lunch @ Valencia Luncheria

    Valencia Luncheria
    PH: 203-846-8009

    OLD ADDRESS!: 172 Main Street
    Norwalk, Connecticut 06851

    venb1.jpg

So boo and i were watching food network and Guy Fieri was talking about this place…and not only that, the food looked fucking amazing. (You can actually watch the ‘review’ here on youtube). Also since I was planning a trip to Maine with Boo, and it was totally on the way…and Boo was definitely interested in going SO WHY NOT?!?!?!

    venb2.jpg

The décor inside is of a cozy little friendly joint. Three boards chalked up with today’s special. Its a nice quaint little place, but don’t let this picture below fool you, we went during off hours, and on our second trip there, the place was sooo busy we had to order out (for Boo’s birthday, which was made ok, cause i found a nice nearby park for a romantic…yeah ok back to the review…)

    venb3.jpg

    venb4.jpg

Two sauces supplied on the table. One is a cold vegetable sauce that accents almost anything you put on it, and the second i don’t really remember, but i think it was a spicier sauce…hmmmm guess i’m just gonna have to go back and try some more… *wink

    venb6.jpg
    Boo got a papaya Batidos
(fresh fruit blended with milk and ice)
which was a bit on the thicker side for me,
    but she loved it.
    $3.50

    venb7.jpg
Boo also ordered Mango Iced Tea for me
cause she felt i’d like it…which she was very right…it was fucking amazing and i loved that they let you get the syrup and add as much as you want…and the bamboo stick was a nice piece to chew on. $2.50

    venb5.jpg

Our food didn’t take that long to come. Presentation was really nice, a cool banana leaf on the bottom, piping hot food…looked GREAT!!! Yesh we only ordered Arepas our first time around.

    venb8.jpg

Arepas: Pernil (Venezuelan pork roast): $3.75 and Carne Mechada (shredded beef): $4.00

    venb9.jpg

Funny story about the Pernil…first time around i didn’t even get to try it cause *ahem* someone took it and scarfed it down thinking that the Pernil and Carne were the same thing….Well second time around, i was able to try it…and it was really really good….a definite, MUST GET whenever we er…i go.

    venb10.jpg

The Carne did look on the dryer side, but it was very flavorful…and accented well against the fried corn cake (which you can get skillet roasted if you want) It was very good the first time around, however, second time around it wasn’t as good.

    venb13.jpg

Jenny (chicken, cheese, spinach): this was ok good. not my most favorite, but i can definitely see it as something someone could like alot. but it wasn’t for my taste buds. everything was moist and savory, well cooked. no dryness or misplaced flavors. $4.00

    venb14.jpg

    venb11.jpg

Zach (crispy chicken, honey): now this was totally a show stealer…we figured it was gonna be on the dryer side, but the chicken was perfectly cooked, perfectly crispy, and the honey PERFECTLY accented the ENTIRE dish. This is a MUST GET everytime we go there…it was ridiculously good. $4.00

    venb12.jpg

    burritoVALENCIA

What was interesting was our second time around we actually got a free burrito…don’t know if it was compliments of the house, or a mistake in the order. It was a Pulled Pork Burrito, and it was really freaking good…but it was HUGE!!! and not to mention $9.00 bucks on the menu.

    DraChef.jpg

Summation: What was really cool was, second time around we got to meet Micheal Young, who was on the episode of ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’. He’s a really nice guy, totally not full of himself or anything like that. Even though it was slamming busy in Valencia Luncheria, he took the time to take a pic with me. I highly recommend the place, as all of the food was good to really freaking good. I look forward to stopping here for all my trips up to Maine, and can’t wait to try the other quite interesting dishes and combinations. Great food. Great company. what more could you ask for? CHEERS!!!

    Lunch @ Valencia Luncheria

    Valencia Luncheria
    PH: 203-846-8009

    172 Main Street
    Norwalk, Connecticut 06851

    venb1.jpg

Now you all remember i visited this joint last year, and i’ve been coming back trying the other things that they had to offer…and believe you me, so far i haven’t been let down at all.

    val1.jpg

The Works: 1 arepa of your choice, 1 empanada of your choice, ceviche, plus rice, beans, plaintains and avocado. $12.00

    val2.jpg

Now how can you top this? its like you get the best of everything here! and how could i not add the cold veggie sauce and the hot sauce that’s provided on the table? soooo goooooooooood. The beans are ridiculously good…don’t let their plain looks fool you!

    val3.jpg

    val4.jpg
    nice plaintain, delicious avocado.
    val5.jpg
    heavenly ceviche.

    val6.jpg

I choose the cheeseburger empanada….I LOVE THE CHEESE BURGER EMPANADA…the burger is always perfectly cooked, with a little tinge of spicyness (for flavoring, and will be fine for the faintest of spice eaters) and the fresh mozz they use PERFECTLY accents it…it’s ridiculously good and i super highly recommend this as the FIRST EMPANADA you should try at this joint.

    val7.jpg

    val8.jpg

and of course…the Zach…I feel this is the most simple yet so complicated in texture and flavoring arepa that they have to offer…of course many of you would beg to differ, but the crunchy crispy chicken, and the light hearted breading with a hint of salty flavor all drizzled in sweet sweet thin honey, accompanied by the warm inviting innards of the arepa with the crunchy fried outer corn bread….make it an ochestra of the three letter word….YUM. and i’ll have words with any man (or woman) that says other wise.

Summation: This place kicks ass and will kick your ass. Don’t let the pics fool you, its alot of food, and i’ll guarantee you that it will take any big man/woman appetite to boot. and if not…order some more arepas or empanadas. i mean i was full, and i ordered some more…to go of course.

and yes, this place is always ridiculously packed, but service is always really friendly and pleasant.

    • Chapaghetto….er Chapagetti….

      chapaghetto
After seeing my Green Tea Ramen post, a lot of readers have been telling me to try Chapagetti….i thought it was a tad on the blander side….perhaps maybe i left too much water in the pot for the sauce?

Any which way, FatNation members have been giving me different iterations to give the Chapagetti more ‘UMPH’.

I look forward to trying other renditions of this:
      1. Sliced rice cakes/veggies and meat
      2. Korean Canned Spicy Tuna (Gochu Chamchi)
      3. Braised Gluten
      4. Spam
      5. Hot Dogs lol.

      anymore suggestions?

    • 25 cent wings at Tropix

      Tropix
      PH: 718-275-0024

      95-32 Queens Boulevard
      Rego Park, NY 11374

      tropix1

Well Crazy has been telling me about 25cent wings on Mondays at Tropix (25 different flavors too!) for a little bit, and since i was working Alpha’s shift all this week, i figured i might as well hit up some tasty joints due to the earlier work hours. SO WHY NOT?!?!?!?

      tropix2

      - Click to see all 25 flavors -

      tropix3

There’s a 2 drink min to get wings. Which makes sense…and isn’t such a big deal. However, sometimes i think Crazy purposely tries to get me drunk so he can take advantage of me…that dirty bastard.

      tropix4

It took a while for our food to get to us, but what do you expect? the place was PACKED.

      garlicparm

Garlic Parm, our safety…just like Hooters…YUM!

      spicy chili

Spicy Chili, these were good, but nothing to wow about.

      jackdaniels

Jack Daniels, these were aite…they’re better at TGIFs.

      spicyGreenSauce

Spicy Green Sauce, These definitely stole the show…you could probably put this green sauce on a shoe and it’d taste good. (i highly recommend you ask for more sauce on the side as they are a little skimpy with the green spicy sauce.)

tropix5 Summation: Of course just having this once a month is plenty fine, as you don’t want to consume too much fried food, but it was really good.

I’d recommend ordering a salad ($5.00) or some starch to help with the digestion of such greasy food.

All in all the wings were pretty good, and that’s saying a lot since i went to school up in Buffalo (HOME OF THE BUFFALO WING! WOOT!)

I’d definitely recommend rounding up some friends and going there and getting some cheap eats.

      fulong6

good grief this is freaking good.

      Arepas Cafe
      PH: 718-937-3835

      Astoria, NY 11106

      acafe1

The Professor and I had wanted to eat at Cafe Triskell, however, right when we walked in, the awesome cook told us that they weren’t opened today, and that he was actually going to be on vacation for a week. We wished him a  much deserved good vacation and left. This did not help with our hunger, so we decided to go across the street to Arepas Cafe, a place i had spied the last time i had gone to Cafe Triskell.

*restaurant front picture courtesy of Google Street View.

      acafe2

Our food came rather quick, with the two supplied sauces and my Passion fruit Juice (Maracuya) $3.00

      acafe3

House Salad (Iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, avocados, and house dressing): It was just as expected, a pretty much plain jane salad. It was what we had ordered, but what really made the salad all that much better were the two dressings supplied…one was a reddish/orangish dressing that was spicy. the other was a green cold vegetable dressing known as guasacaca. Guasacaca is so good that you could put it on a shoe and it’d taste good. $6.75

      acafe4

Mami (Venezuelan roast pork, avocado and white cheese): This was really good, but its crucial that you get all the ingredients in your mouth when you take a bite. It was even better with the green sauce…and of course pushing some salad into this gigantic arepa didn’t hurt either. lol $7.25

      acafe5

      acafe6

Carne Mechada Arepa (Venezuelan style shredded Beef): This arepa was also really good. Again pushing salad into it with some guasacaca sauce really made it soooooo gooooood. $6.00

      acafe7

acafe8 Summation: In total, i’d say that the Arepas are definitely different than the ones i had at Valencia Luncheria…I’m guessing Arepas Cafe uses corn flower, whereas Valencia actually uses corn meal.

So i’d have to say the Arepas are different…These are pretty good, but definitely on the pricier side.

I definitely like Valencia more, but for a quick fix..and if i’m not in the mood to drive so far (Valencia Luncheria is in another state afterall)…I don’t mind coming here…

I also look forward to trying some other things they offer. Decor is pretty nice, and service was a little spotty, but all in all i enjoyed the food, just not the price.
