  • Crepes @ Cafe Triskell

    Cafe Triskell

So one morning while waking up, Tigress and I were talking about our favorite breakfast places and trying to decide what we were in the mood for. Almost immediately Crepes shot into Tigress’s mind and her favorite place to get them was at Cafe Triskell…and whatever Tigress wants…she usually gets…and i’ve been meaning to try a new restaurant…SO WHY NOT?!
    cafet2 cafet3
Surprisingly it’s a cozy little joint. We got sat rather quickly by the polite waiter…er…garcon and he brought us utensils and a bottle of water….which for some reason tasted really freaking good for cold water.

    Organic Tea: $3.00

    cafet4

Tigress recommended their flavored organic teas so we both got a cup, though we had forgotten to order it cold, the hot version was still really good.

    cafet5

as we waited for our food after we had ordered, the garcon had brought over some warm rolls and nice semi-melted lard butter. It was really freaking good. *tear

    French Onion Soup: $6.75

    cafet6

First up was the French onion soup Gratinee with aged Swiss Cheese. This joint had won a lot of awards for their French Onion soup…

    cafet7

and i could see why….this is probably one of the best french onion soups that i’ve ever had…and i know the reason why…it wasn’t overly super duper over salted like every other rendition i’ve had of this french soup. And since the soup wasn’t over-salted, you could taste the other ingredients like their aged swiss.

    cafet8

also they don’t skimp you on the ingredients as the bread and plethora of onions were welcomed in this magical mixture of orchestrated tastiness.

    Foie Gras Appetizer: $18.00

    cafet9

Next up was seared Foie Gras with braised lettuce, blueberries, raspberries, and pomegranate in a balsamic reduction. Tigress loves sweet breads, and had never tried foie gras, so i knew she was in for a treat.

    cafet10

the foie gras itself was perfectly cooked and quite delicious by itself. However, adding the berry concoction with some reduction brought it out exponentially.

    cafet11

The foie gras appetizer was a sweet success as both I and Tigress dogged it (though she dogged most of it )

    Mussels with Chips: $12.00

    cafet12

Then came our Mussels a la Nage with chips. These were piping hot and really really good.

    cafet13

the mussels were so succulent, and the “broth” so tasty. I wanted bread to dip into it. The mussels with the onions and some broth were perfect. Again no flavor was over-powering…a great symphony of yum and tasty all at once.

    cafet14

The garcon had recommended for us to dip the fries into the broth, as that is what most customers do…

    cafet15

But i kid you not, both Tigress and I agreed that these fries were ridiculously good, no dipping necessary…perfectly crispy outside, soft moist hot potato inside…

    cafet16

Then finally our crepes arrived! lol.

    Ham and Swiss Crepe: $7.00

    cafet17

I just got a plain jane crepe with ham and aged swiss. Love their aged swiss, as it played well with the freshly sliced ham.

Goat Cheese with Herbs Crepe: $8.00

    cafet18

Tigress got the crepe with aged goat cheese with herbs and a mesclun salad.
    cafet19 cafet20 cafet21
her crepe was a lot better than mine…the goat cheese and herbs were soooo goood.

    cafet22

i know definitely the next time i come here, i’d like to have this goat cheese herb crepe with some ham. lol

    Lemon and Sugar Crepe: $4.50

    cafet23

at this junction, i was stuffed, but Tigress insisted that we get this dessert. i was thinking she was pretty full too and pretty crazy…

    cafet24

all i have to say is…i ate more than half of it even though i was so full. I think next time i might just all together skip my savory crepe and go straight for this crepe. This was ridiculously good…the sugar and lemon played off themselves so well, and the crispy edges just made it absolutely heavenly.

    Le Bill:
cafet25 Summary: Though the savory crepes didn’t really wow me (admittedly i’m spoiled by lobster crepes from maine…)…Everything else sure did!

I would definitely recommend the mussels and chips, and if you’re feeling rich, definitely get the foie gras appetizer.

The french onion soup is really good too….i am not an expert on french onion soup, but i liked it a lot!

and a MUST GET everytime you go is the lemon and sugar crepe…DEFINITE DEFINITE MUST GET!

    Foie Gras: $14.95

    ctriskelr4

Was really good last time, was really good this time. Definitely recommend if foie gras is your cup of tea!

    Escargot: $8.95

    ctriskelr2

(Snails, prosciutto, herb butter) served with Toasted bread. Sorry no pics of the bread, but this is soooooo goood… the snails are soooooo succulent. best part is taking the toasted bread and dipping into the herb butter concoction…GENIUS!

    ctriskelr3

    Mussels a la Nage: $18.95

    ctriskelr5

I admit, i’m a mussel fiend, and this place makes them really good. This is the dinner portion. and the french fries are to die for, you can ask them for ketchup or better yet…dip them in the mussel broth…*drooling on keyboard nao….

    ctriskelr6

    Dessert Crepes!

    ctriskelr7

Yesh, we were uber full…but there’s always room for dessert!!! lol.

    Poached Pear: $7.50

    ctriskelr8

This was really good, too much for me, but i think anyone that likes poached pear will love this crepe rendition.

    Lemon & Sugar: $4.75

    ctriskelr9

This is by far my favorite crepe here…no matter how full i am, i can definitely dog this…sooo goood…sooo lemony….sooo good…*tear.

    Le Bill:
ctriskelr10 Summary: hahaha admittedly i think the only new items i tried was the escargot and the poached pear…both were a great addition to the items i love getting at this place.

Though what i really want to try is their steak, crab cakes, duck….oh wait…i should just say the rest of the menu

I highly recommend this joint…it’s really great for dates and small groups of maybe 6 at most? Great environment, lovely neighborhood (on that street…don’t stray! )

    • Runny Ham Scram on Lazy Days….

      hamscramEATSITE
Somedays, i’m just lazy so i just dice up some ham, loosely stir some raw eggs in a bowl, add some salt, add some pepper, toss it all in around in a skillet, throw it on a plate while it’s still runny. Add Toast and a huge cup of Cafe Du Monde as accomplices, in This Usual Suspects pic on a lazy breakfast morning day…. but don’t think for a minute the laziness deters from the amazing taste and satisfaction of a lazy mouthgasm. and i’m almost positive you wouldn’t mind either.

    • Eating Dogs at Costco

      dogs1
Had the hot dogs at Costco with Alpha and Lawless for $1.50 you get a huge dog and unlimited refill soda….pretty nice. What could top that?

      dogs2
The Italian sausage definitely tops that. at $2.79 this sausage dog is really good…comes with sauteed onions and peppers…(their Berry Smoothie is very very good too $1.45 DELICIOUS!)

      dogs3
got to love it when you take a bite and the sausage just snaps in your mouth….
      dogs4
Good grief, sometimes in the mornings on my way to work i just stop by costco and pick up Italian Sausage dogs for everyone in the office….they are THAT GOOD!…and it doesn’t help that Costco is only 2 blocks away from my house….LOVE COSTCO!!!

    • I hate Falafels.

      King of Falafel & Shwarma

      on 53rd and Park Avenue
      New York, NY

      kof1

I’ve had Falafels in Australia, Austria, CANADA, other states and a bunch of places in NYC…and all have finally told me…i don’t like falafels…i hate their consistency, i hate their flavor…i just hate them. Then a coworker had told me that a famous falafel guy that had won the vendy for 2010…i was curious to try…and check it out, He decided to open up an Express Cart near my office (express meaning there is no rice, however, he does say that he is thinking of adding rice in the future.) I recommend you go early when they open at 11am…as the line grows EXPONENTIALLY as time progresses. Coolest thing is, as the line gets longer, him or his partner walk around handing out Falafels.
      kof2 kof3

      kof4

Falafel & Schwarma Mixed over salad (plates include salad [Salads include lettuce, tomato, onions, pickled turnips and green pickles], pita, tahini sauce, white sauce and hot sauce [you pick the sauces you want on it]) $8.00

      kof5

THIS WAS GOOOOOOD! I got it with hot sauce. first things first, mix it all up and stuff it into the Pita bread that they give you.

      kof6

oh man, i admit i wish he served it with rice, but stuffing it into the pita was quite enjoyable too. You really get the snap/crunch of the pickled turnip and pickles…as the sour-ness compliments the salty and spice…all tempered by the cool lettuce leaves. I really enjoyed this.

      kof7

Admittedly i did not put any falafels in my pita…because i couldn’t stop myself from eating them all before they would have made it into my pita. These are by far the best Falafels i’ve ever had…the crispy warm exterior is the best flavoring i’ve had of a falafel, followed by the warm innards just was so warm and welcoming…like eating homecooking…chickpeas at their best.

      kof8

Summation: I would just return to this cart for these falafels alone. that’s how good they are…and let me tell you, i hate falafels…but these were absolutely delicious.

The meats themselves were pretty good, and i felt they accented the falafels really well, lol. I’m looking forward to trying either the Astoria location with rice or perhaps he’ll have rice sooner at the express location in Manhattan.

      HAPPY EATING!!! CHEERS!!!

    • Dry Rub Porkchops over hot white rice…

      eatsworldPORKCHOPS
I found a dry rub up in Maine. I’ve put it on my grilled chicken, steak, wings and now porkchops…it’s ridiculous how a simple rub can turn anything into something so ridiculously delicious (please refrain from the twss jokes…..) next up, gonna try it on tofu.

      New York, NY 10019

Good friend JW1976 sent me a link for 20 of the best new burgers in nyc (as if the 82 burger challenge wasn’t enough from M) Which i showed Alpha. Whom responded, “hey, one of these places is pretty close to us. I’m gonna go get something, you want something?” SURE! WHY NOT!?!?

*storefront picture courtesy of the google gods (translation: i did not take this storefront pic).

      stake2

Bacon ‘N Cheese Double Steakburger (a double steakburger with melt american cheese and hickory smoked bacon. served with fries) $4.79

      stake3

Frisco Melt (Two Steakburgers with American and swiss cheeses, on buttery grilled sourdough with our sweet ‘n tangy Frisco sauce. Served with fries) $6.48

      stake4

The burger was good, but nothing to wow about. But for the price…it’s definitely a GREAT burger for it’s price in the middle of Manhattan.

      stake5

This by far…stole the show. The frisco melt was really good. the sauce, the cheeses, the two steak patties….ridonkulously good.

Summation: The fries are definitely ‘eh’ but the prices really make this pretty worth while. I highly recommend the Melts…but be advised…this location has a shortened menu, they don’t have everything that is on their website, so keep that in min before you trek next to the Late Show.

    • I made breakfast.

When i was younger, i would always eat scrambled eggs or sometimes even omelets…NEVER sunnyside or over easy…
      sunnyside1
I use to find it so gross, especially when my older sister would always get sunnyside up eggs and slurp the yolk…*shudders…. (sometimes i think she did that on purpose to gross me out…don’t even let me tell you about chocolate ice cream…*shudders twice)
      sunnyside2
Now i understand and can’t get enough of it myself…dipping my toast into it… or best is homemade corned beef hash with it….sooooo gooooood. LOL

    • Kraft Mac and Cheese

For some reason i have always loved mac and cheese from a box.
      kraftmac
Perhaps cause of nostalgic reasons? don’t get me wrong, i love the pasta and admit i sometimes grate my own cheese concoction instead of using their powder…but its always something about mac and cheese from a box that always has me coming back for more…
      kraftmac2
and after figuring out that the type of milk and type of butter you use controls how good this comes out….i, ultimately, do keep coming back for more…
