Since the last time i ordered everything was preset and i couldn’t pick exactly which riceballs i wanted, i just had to try the other very interesting sounding riceballs offered at this joint. Here’s the second round.

here’s a direct link to their menu on their site.

    omsb2 omsb3

    omsbee1

They must really love us, cause we found a ton of pocky and gummies dumped into our bag.

    omsbee2

Luckily my VP knows the innerworkings of this joint pretty well and took what i wanted and changed it to two Set A’s (which ended up saving me money! WOOT!) thank god for upper management! lol

    omsbee3

2 Set As - Any 3 rice balls + any soup (soups not pictured) $7.25

    omsbee4

Shrimp Pop Corn – this was actually really good, the shrimp was still a little crispy and the sauce and leaf accented it well.

    omsbee5

Lobster Salad – of course i had to try this and see how it was. too much sauce for my taste, but it was pretty good…but as for the price and the amount, i’ll most likely pass on this next time.

    omsbee6

Fried Octopus – this was actually really good, quite surprising.

    omsbee7

Gorgeous Football Rice (Salmon Roe) – the Gorgeous Football Rice was so good the first time around, i wanted to try its distant cousin with salmon roe…which was pretty much the same…just with salmon roe…go figure. =P still pretty good.

    omsbee8
    Curry Beef Ball -
it was ok. won’t be getting it again. =P
    omsbee9
    Eel -
was also ok…won’t be getting it again…unless i’m at the place to get it.

    omsbee10

Shrimp Tempura - this was pretty good. i bet it would have been even better had i eaten it at the store. very impressive flavors that accented the tempura really well.

    omsbee11

    omsbee12

Wasabi Shrimp – this was something i saw, and i love wasabi, i can eat globs of it with nothing…love the burn. This is a very interesting onigiri…if you don’t like wasabi, you’ll hate this…the wasabi flavor is pretty strong but not over powering where everyone will get teary eye…but i liked it. Will definitely get this again.

    omsbee13

Summation: ultimately i like this place, though i don’t and won’t feel like ordering once a week…maybe once every few months. my review still stands, i hold this place in good light, and won’t mind trying some of their other special rice balls. woot! CHEERS!

  • Luke’s Lobster 4 Alphatrion’s Birthday

    Luke’s Lobster
    PH: 212-249-4241

    242 East 81st Street (2nd Ave)
    New York, NY 10028

    luke1

Well, it was Alphatrion’s birthday, and he had never been to Luke’s Lobster before, so i thought it would be awesome to do a driveby and pick up some good shtuff from the joint. I called to make sure they do pick up, but the only sucky thing is they had run out of empress crab claws, so the meals were being discounted to compensate.

    llob1

(2x) Noah’s Ark – Unfortunately these normally come with empress crab claws but they were all out…so they discounted each Noah’s ark by 4 dollars. In each Noah’s ark is 2 halves of a Lobster Roll, 2 Halves of a Crab Roll, 2 Halves of a shrimp roll, 2 bags of chips (your choice), and 2 Maine Root Soda’s (your choice) all for $36.00 (usually 40, but no empress crab claws.) We got two Noah’s Arks.

    llob2

    llob3

Your choice of chips: Sea Salt & Vinegar, Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper, Jalapeno, Smokehouse BBQ, and Sea Salt (not pictured)

    llob4

Your choice Maine Root Soda: Root Beer, Ginger Brew, Sarsaparilla, Blueberry, Mandarin Orange (not pictured), and Lemon Lime (not pictured).

    llob5

and off to the main course! (i also wanted to try out their New England Clam Chowda)

    llob6 llob7
New England Clam Chowder – i wanted to see if their chowder was any good…and it was pretty freaking good. not overly salty, and not over buttered…it was pretty perfect, and the potatoes were like tiny balls. Not the best chowder i’ve had in my life, but in nyc, this definitely ranks at one of the tops (IN NYC). $7.00

    llob8

    llob9

Now off to the three half rolls which you could also say is a “Taste of Maine” (which is what Noah’s Ark really is…its basically just two “Taste of Maine”‘s but for cheaper!

    llob10

Crab Roll Half, was good, but a little bit on the blander side…most likely more celery salt would have helped.

    llob11

Lobster Roll Half, good as usual…still the best lobster roll i’ve had in NYC.
(best in life is still Red’s. WOOT!)

    llob12

Shrimp Roll Half…was actually surprisingly good. I mean this was really good…I’d definitely go back for this.

    llob13

Summation: I was happy that Alpha liked the food, and was also happy that the rest of the items we tried was really good. I’ll definitely be going back…and definitely want to try the other soups.

One thing to note for me was that service is always friendly at this location.

I do have one thing that i wouldn’t mind…if they served really good french fries with their food…that would make this joint even crazier good.

    CHEERS!!!

  • Why go to Gray’s Papaya?

    Gray’s Papaya
    PH: 212-799-0243

    2090 Broadway (Between 72nd St & 73rd St)
    New York, NY 10023

    gp1

Well what would a trip to NYC be without having a hot dog from NYC? Aside from pizza and a burger, and some halal ya gots to have a dog. And i wasn’t about to risk a street vendor, so i decided to take Osmunderwear to Gray’s Papaya. a tad on the pricier side…but whatever, it was on the way through our route of 33 restaurants in 5 days. 0_o

    gp2

    gp3

We got the Recession Combo which is two dogs (any toppings) and a Papaya drink. $4.45

    gp4

The dogs were good…but admittedly nothing spectacular or wowable…my hotdogs are better than this…but what really stood out…was the papaya drink…hot damn that drink was ridiculously good.

    gp5

Summation: Yeah, i wouldn’t super recommend this place for a hotdog nor would i say it is a must go…but the papaya drink…i’d definitely recommend…i liked it alot cause it was really light, not heavy bogged down, nor did it feel like i drank a brick, moreover it wasn’t water downed where there was no flavor…it had a really full nice flavor without that hearty pulpy texture that i’ve normally found in these kinds of drinks…so when in doubt…and you see one of these fine locations…get a papaya drink…

(also…admittedly…i felt $4.45 is a bit pricey for two hotdogs and a beverage…)

i also want to try Papaya king to see how they stand against them…WOOT!

    HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!

  • Bánh Mì Saigon NEW LOCATION!

    Bánh Mì Saigon Bakery
    PH: 212-941-1541

198 Grand Street (between Mulberry St & Mott St)
    New York, NY 10013

    bms1

uh oh…alot of times new location means not as good. WILL BANH MI SAIGON SUFFER THE SAME PREDICAMENT?!?!??! nope. still as good and tasty as ever. *drooooolz. me, Osmundaregalis, and three banh mi sammiches…all in our moufs…all over our faces. (sorry those pictures will not be included in this post.)

    bms2

The Pork edition. Good as usual. love it.

    bms3

The Chicken edition. surprised at how juicy the chicken was/is. Will definitely be going back to get more of this.

    bms4

The Paté edition. very different. very interesting. still very good. not much paté though…hmmmm?

    bms5

whats even more awesome then those three banh mi renditions? the fact that they allow you to buy all the ingredients to make your own and have a banh mi party…like i did here. =)

Summation: Still good. Still super Tasty. And next time for me to try them all in their spicy incantations. WOOT! CHEERS!

Monday, January 05, 2009 – PAST REVIEW! DISREGARD OLD ADDRESS!

Vietnamese Sandwich (Bánh Mì) @ Bánh Mì Saigon Bakery

    Bánh Mì Saigon Bakery
    PH: 212-941-1541

    138 Mott Street
    New York, NY 10013

    vietsan0

Mind you, i didn’t even know these things existed till Alphatrion told me about how his ex use to devour these left and right. So i was always curious about them, but never really had the chance to try one till now, and from one of the best places to get one in NYC.

    vietsan0a

What makes it even more interesting is this ‘sandwich shop’ is located at the back of a jewelry store.

    vietsan1

Pork Bánh Mì (Pork Vietnamese Sandwich) – Lovely Daikon radish, pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, mayo, vietnamese salami and pork…that feels like over cooked char siu (but in a really kick ass good way like hot jerky or juicy bacon.) pictured here is only half of the sandwich. $3.75.

    vietsan2

the ingredients definitely play off each other, as when you actually get a biteful with all the ingredients, they meld together to make the sandwich really good, and i mean every ingredient is important…i love cilantro, so it showing off it’s flavor in this ochestra is very pleasant.

    vietsan3

now i’ve read other reviewers, and i felt that everyone that gave this sandwich a bad review…didn’t really know the sandwich or the origins of how the sandwich should be. I mean some reviewers even left out key ingredients that were in the sandwich (that are/were kinda blatantly staring you them in the face in their pictures….but whatever the case, i felt that they just disliked this type of sandwich rather than the actual place itself.

    vietsan4

Summation: This was a really good f’ckin sandwich. One of the best i’ve had in a while, and even better when it’s on the hotter side. I love the meat how it’s salty and pungent, and just kicks it right to the other ingredients. I am looking forward to trying it ‘spicy’ with siracha and sliced jalapenos…. *drooooolage. and all for $3.75, that’s great bang for buck! woot!!!!

Monday, January 19, 2009 – PAST REVIEW! DISREGARD OLD ADDRESS!

    Bánh Mì Party

    Bánh Mì Saigon Bakery

    138 Mott Street
    New York, NY 10013

    vietsan0

So after finding out that you can actually purchase the ingredients from Saigon bakery to make ur own banh mi, WHY NOT have a BANH MI PARTY?!!?, and even better, get fresh bread! and add more roast pork? oooh now thats an idea.

    Bm1.jpg

Hoagie bread, italian bread, pickled veggies (turnip and carrots) $2, the roast pork/bacon $8, Viet Salami $3.50, cilantro, and cucumbers. Oddly enough, its very important to have all these ingredients, as the banh mi really is a symphony of these well choregraphed flavors/textures.
    Bm2.jpg Bm3.jpg

    Bm4.jpg Bm5.jpg
the viet salami has a very distinct flavor. most would think it would be overly salty due to the ingredients, but this is totally not the case…by itself the salami does have enough flavor and would be great solo in a sandwich or even on a cracker.
    Bm6.jpg
Here’s a sliced portion for you to look at… mmmmm msg.

    Bm7.jpg

    Bm8.jpg

Bacon/Roast Pork….this is sooooo good. what i do is pop some in the microwave to get it sizzling before putting it into the sandwich.

    Bm9.jpg

    Bm10.jpg Bm11.jpg
the pickled veggies i feel are pretty much the same as the 2 dollar ones you can find at your local korean supermarkets…however, i’m picky about my korean picked veggies as some places have too much liquid in them or slice them differently. I admit this is my favorite type of cut of it.

    Bm11a.jpg

cilantro, a must in a viet sandwich!!! gives it that nice settle kick near the end.

    Bm11b.jpg

cool sliced cucumbers, a nice burst of coolness and refreshingness.

    Bm12.jpg

of course if you’re allergic make it as you please, or fill it with what you like, chicken, hot dogs, curry….etc..etc.

    Bm13.jpg

some like it the simple way…

    Bm14.jpg

    cross section

    Bm15.jpg

Bread, slice bread, rip out some innards of bread, mayo, and put in sizzling viet flavored bacon.

    Bm16.jpg

    sliced viet salami.

    Bm17.jpg

    some picked veggies.

    Bm18.jpg

    Bm19.jpg

i ran out of cilantro and cucumbers…booooo…but the banh mi was still ridiculously good….

    Bm20.jpg

Summation: this was very good, and i look forward to making these at my superbowl party, WOOT WOOT!! and nothing compliments it better than a nice cup of hot milk tea. WOOT! CHEERS!!!

    • The Best Damn Cheese Cake in NYC

      Eileen’s Cheesecake
      PH:
      212-966-5585

      17 Cleveland Place
      New York, NY 10012

      eil1 eil2
My review on this place back in 2007 still stands the same, as this place just keeps getting better and better. And everyone that i bring here ends up agreeing with me one way or another…Eileen’s cheesecake is the best damn cheesecake in in NYC…
      eil3

      eil4

Its a cozy little mom and pop joint. they kept it small…which seemingly worked out well, as you saw alot of the larger expanded dessert places got shrunk down heavily when the economy hit bad….but not Eileen’s…they kept it short, sweet…and simple.

      eil5

Everytime in this place, majority of the shtuff is sold out quick.

      eil6

As you can see they don’t sell their cheesecake by the slices, instead they sell it by the cupcake which they consider slices.

Summation: now the slices are fine and dandy and all, but i feel that the cheesecakes are better than the cheesecake cupcakes…*shrug, don’t know how to put my finger on it, but its just better….so in the future i will just have to get a small cheesecake with four toppings instead of these tiny cheesecake cupcakes.

      Love this place. CHEERS!

    • The Best Damn Egg Custard Tarts in NYC

      Manna House Bakery
      PH: 212-966-3766

125 Mott Street (between Grand Street and Hester Street)
      New York, NY 10013

      manna1

I can blame alpha 100% for this, as he was the one to bring these to my house once (and many times after that). Not only did he get me addicted but my mum always zooms to the Manna House Bakery box whenever she sees it and has to yank one of these bad boys out and devour it. These are the best Egg Custard Tarts I’ve ever had in my life. Osmundaregalis was lucky to witness and participate in my first time visiting the actual joint.

      manna2

a cozy little mom and pop joint. yesh, they do have other items, but the eyes homed in on one thing and one thing only.

      manna3

Egg Custard Tarts. 80 cents a pop. i wanted to buy them all…

      manna4

Perfect shape. Perfect Smell. Perfect Texture. all in my mouth. all for me. none for you.

      manna5

Summation: again, this is the best damn egg custard tart i’ve ever had (haven’t been to HK yet), and i’m pretty sure it will be the best you’ve ever had in NYC too. The flavor, the texture, the crust…everything is perfect about it.

it could be a day old. it could be two days old. it could be a week old, this egg custard tart will still taste fucking amazing.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND and a definite MUST GET if you come visit my city.

      CHEERS!!!

    • Beard Papa’s fights on.

      Beard Papa’s
      PH: 212-799-3770

      2167 Broadway
      New York, NY 10024

      bp1

I’ve had Beard Papa’s before, but never on location…and seeing as i’m not much of a dessert person (or a very PICKY dessert person as someone told me once) i didn’t think much to ever visit this place. However, since Osmundaregalis was in town, and she wanted to try it…why not? As i had heard in the past there were multiple locations opened up in nyc, however, all but one location was still open.

      Décor:

      bp2

as you enter, you’ll realized that it is a pretty warm quaint joint.

      bp3

cutesy chalk board outlining their menu and hours, and how to stalk the bearded man pictured.

      bp4

Then of course you notice the huge communal table that i suspect is to get everyone to sit with each other and talk. I decided to sit at the loner table by myself.

      The Puff and then Some:

      bp5

known for mochi also and specialized cream puffs…supposedly they are made to order.

      bp6 bp7
Hot Chocolate (10oz): Osmundaregalis decided to get some hot chocolate as it was freezing and we had been walking all over manhat. The hot chocolate was actually really really good. Not as good as i’ve had in Europe, but it was still pretty fucking good. I think their downfall was…that they used American chocolate…which has a tendency of being overly sweet. $3.10

      bp8

      bp9

Regular Cream Puff: and now for the main event. Now mind you i’ve had this several times already, people always bringing them to my events and such…and they’ve never been anything remarkable. However, i must admit…this time it was actually really good. And i fear it had alot to do with the fact that it was made on the spot, instead of brought over sitting in a box for a day or few hours. $1.75

      bp10

      bp11

Summation: Ultimately, i’d highly recommend if you are into cream puffs, to eat it on location, rather than having it ‘second hand”.

Though admittedly, when you eat it, if you’re a brute like me you’ll end up murdering/crushing it…try to be a little more gentle…as Osmundaregalis was not impressed when i handed it back to her (for her turn) and it was basically crushed. “YOU CRUSHED IT!” (-__-)

    • Egg Custard King VS Natalie Bakery

      Egg Custard King/Natalie Bakery
      PH: 212-226-8882

      271 Grand Street
      New York, NY 10002

      dtotw1

I’ve been hearing about Egg Custard King for the longest time and how they have all these different kinds of egg tarts…and to be honest i’ve eaten alot of them, but never on location…and always felt they were eh….so finally having the time and ability to go…i find out they are no more…and are now called Natalie Bakery (in place of their second location, as i heard the first location is no more.) and Moreover, it would seem Natalie Bakery is only half the size of the original Egg Custard King 2. Oh well…they had two kinds of tarts…so why not?

      dtotw2

Best part? both tarts JUST CAME OUT OF THE OVEN. so had to get one of each.

      dtotw3

Egg Custard Tart: this was really good as it just came out of the oven so it was warm with hot innards…jeez was this good, but not the best i’ve had. $0.90

      dtotw4

      dtotw5

Portuguese Egg Custard Tart: Now this was alot better than the egg custard tart, and it was nice and warm…which really warmed me up on such a cold day…totally hit the spot. $0.90

      dtotw6

Summation: Though this would not be my first go to place for Egg Custard Tart if i was in the neighborhood and needed a ‘don tot’ fix, it would definitely hit the spot if my favorite place was closed. or as us FatNationers would do…just get egg tarts from here and my favorite place, i mean at 90 cents a piece, its really not a wallet killer…

I recommend this place, but it is not necessarily a MUST GO. CHEERS!

    • Attack of the Doughnut Plant

      Doughnut Plant
      PH: 212-505-3700

      379 Grand Street
      New York, NY 10002

      doplant1

You would not believe for the longest time i’ve been meaning to go to this place, but they’re closed on mondays, and they close before i even get out of work…but finally an opportunity arose…and i was gonna make good on it as SOOO MANY PEOPLE have been telling me to go here, and the food network shows, and visitors etc..etc…and Osmundaregalis was here…so why not? *wink.

      Décor:

      doplant2

Inside is a quaint small joint, one counter with the doughnuts, and a semi decent line. It’s nice, warm, and cozy inside…and a Christmas doughnut tree (i went in December) was a nice touch.

      doplant3

Now to some you might think, “ew, they leave the doughnuts out like that?” but in all honesty, the doughnuts move so fast (LITERALLY) that it kinda doesn’t matter.

      DOH! NUTZ!

      doplant4

We decided to pick three doughnuts and try them out.

      doplant5

Creme Brulee (Yeast Doughnut): holey fuck this was goood. Crunchy outside like a real creme brulee, and gooey hot insides….droool. me wants one now. 0_o RECOMMEND!

      doplant6

      doplant7

Tres Leches (Cake Doughnut): this was a good doughnut…but nothing that wow’d me. try it if you like. I find it so odd that so many people rave so much about this doughnut…yet it didn’t have that effect on me…maybe it was too hyped up for me? Fear not, i will be trying it again to make sure i didn’t miss out on a good doughnut on the off chance that particular one was off. (since my partner in crime also said it was only aite.)

      doplant8

      doplant9

Black Berry Jelly Filled Square Doughnut with Peanut Glaze (Yeast Doughnut): this, has left every doughnut i’ve ever had in my life in the dust…. This doughnut is an instant mouthgasm. it is a MUST GET if you ever visit this place. (they make their own jelly that goes in it.)

      doplant10

Summation: this is a MUST GO PLACE if you ever visit my city. GREAT EAT!

    • Shake Shack ATTACK!

      Shake Shack
      PH: 646-237-5036

      152 East 86th Street
      New York, NY 10128

      shakeshack1

I think its bad, but i blame Alphatrion for not having tried this place sooner…as he told me it was just like five guys except with a long wait. So i never paid it heed, until he went again recently and recanted his judgement and said i should definitely check it out. Again, Osmundaregalis was in the neighborhood and i needed a review…two birds…one stone…AGAIN!

      Décor:

      shakeshack2

huge fucking long line. super crowded. hard to get seats. worth the wait? better be. wtf. (surprisingly the line moved pretty fast).
      shakeshack3
they give you a pager so when your order is ready…
      shakeshack4
get paged, come here pick up your food.

      mmmm burgers:

      shakeshack5

food nice and hot and fresh. Shroom burger and Shack Burger.

      shakeshack6

ShackBurger: $4.75 – Holey shit, this becomes the best burger i’ve had in Manhattan now. But i confess i feel whta really makes the burger so outstanding is the “shack sauce”. It really completes the hot burger and compliments the cheese, lettuce and tomater. and of course it doesn’t hurt to have a nice toasted fresh soft bun. Ridiculously good, and super highly recommend.

      shakeshack7

      shakeshack8

Shroom Burger: $6.75 – Now i’ve heard alot of people raving about this…and had to try it before i could put it down…and fucking A, this was a really good non meat burger. The gooey cheese AND the “shack sauce” really put this shroom burger together really well!

      shakeshack9

      shakeshack10

Summation: I highly recommend this place, and it is definitely a MUST GO to place if you ever visit my city. But i can’t believe i’m saying this…but if i could only have one burger at this joint…i’d definitely pick the shroom burger over the shack burger…i might even want to try the shack attack burger next which has both a beef patty and a shroom burger in there. 0_o WHOA.

I will definitely be checking out this joint again (different locations) and try other items on the menu…especially the desserts which i’ve heard great things about…or the hotdog that’s only served twice a year at shake shack? 0_o
